Making the game more newbie friendly.

Post by Dakan »

First off, i'd have a note with homeland.

1 Altara 7 Ghealdan 13 Shienar
2 Amadicia 8 Illian 14 Tar Valon
3 Andor 9 Kandor 15 Tarabon
4 Arad Doman 10 Mayene 16 Tear
5 Arafel 11 Murandy 17 Two Rivers
6 Cairhien 12 Saldaea
Homeland:
(Note: Homeland only affects player politics and rp)

Or something like that.

Also what about all these questions?

When I was young I was:
1) A bully
2) A trickster
3) Quiet
4) A comic
5) A hard worker

I did it based on RP or what I thought the kind of background I'd like my character to have. Apparently this gave me some awful stats :P. So why not have something like...
1) A bully (+1 str -1 int)
or
2) A trickster (best for rogues)
3) Quiet (best for channies)

regardless, I think the current system leads to some bad characters.

Also at the end...
The one word which bests describes me is:
1) Steadfast
2) Trustworthy
3) Intelligent
4) Honourable
5) Deceitful

Your choice:

Also I'd remove thos pages of spam from updates. Cut it down to the single most recent update and make the list available else where.

When you're brand new to the mud thats just a huge wall of spam and doesn't mean anything to anyone.

Starting message!

Welcome. Today it is time to celebrate! Who can tell what adventures
you will embark upon, what treasures, what mysteries, and what people
you will meet... Maybe you will even become someone important!
WELCOME TO MIRRORS OF THE WHEEL
To view a short helpfile type HELP NEWBIE. To view reported bugs type
view bug. To add one, type bug msg. Typo works the same way.

That last line is outdated. I didn't even know you can 'view bug' but the list it brings up is huge and 2 years behind.

Story section:
Is pretty cool, here's what I found though.

Ryhan the warder, wielding a silver-etched sword is standing here.

He wanders from the practice yard and doens't talk any. Not sure if he's bugged or just doesn't have anything to say.

Elanna the Far Dareis Mai, wielding a short thrusting spear and a short thrusting spear is standing here.
She also has nothing else to say.

in the newbieville!

Within an Olive Orchard
To the south lies the side yard of a green and yellow painted farm house and
contains a small vegetable garden in which some plants are growing. All around
this area are many olive trees that are hanging heavy with newly ripe olives.
A ways to the south the side of a two story barn can be seen.
[ Exits: s ]
A low growing sapling with long narrow leaves on tall branches.
A leafless olive tree is here dying.
( 2) A bushy olive tree grows here.
A garden patch is here, forested with the tops of vegetables.

This room has no explanation like the previous rooms. It would be a great area to explain how to grow and harvest stuff. Of which to this date I still dont know how to do :(

Jak looks you up and down closely.

21H 49V >
Jak the newbie trainer says, 'You look like you could use a bit of training in weaponry. You don't see able to protect yourself yet.'

22H 49V >
Jak the newbie trainer says, 'Perhaps I could teach you some other things too.'

23H 49V >
Jak the newbie trainer says, 'If you practice well you may one day be a teacher yourself'

23H 49V >
Jak smiles in satisfaction.

I would add him to say something like..

Jak the newbie trainer says, 'For starting out I suggest you practice ride, armor, dodge, parry and at least one weapon to get started!'

Also I think a horse or two in the starting area would be good to get people used to the idea of riding horses. When you spend an hour or two in the starting area never riding, and then you get into the HUGE world, you dont know about horses or anything.

28H 49V > prac axe
You'll learn nothing new here.

28H 49V >
[ Tip: If a gate is closed, try 'call' to have the gatekeepers open it. ]

28H 49V > prac parry
You practice for a while...

28H 49V > prac dodge
Jak the newbie trainer says, 'Let me know when you are ready.'
Jak the newbie trainer says, 'Until then, I'll await others to join in the class.'
(say "ready to start + Dodge" when you want to begin)

28H 49V > prac ride
Jak the newbie trainer says, 'I'm instructing a Dodge class right now.'

28H 49V > 'ready to start dodge
You say, 'ready to start dodge'

I dont really understand the point of the dodge class. Think it could be removed tbh.

Default prompt is awful.

[ Tip: Want a cool prompt? type 'prompt &n[%T] &y%h/%H &g%v/%V &c%b &r%f> &n' ]

Why not make that the default?

First off I think making lanterns 'wearable' is just bad. Not not being able to wear a shield, with a lantern and weapon on, but being able to weld a weapon with a shield and lantern on is just confusing. One way doesn't let you and the other feels like a workaround buggy kinda way.
