Jaeden

Post by Jaeden »

His mother, Mari, would just say something about “The Wheel weaving as it would,” or some such nonsense and that he would just have to make do with what he was dealt. Was that true or was that the same mantra she used to hold her shattered world together? He could see the hurt in her eyes, the hints of bitter anger and loss whenever any noble passed by while she was elbow deep in soap, lye, and linen. She turned a blind eye whenever Jaden slipped out under the cover of night to steal or sell stolen items, just to help make ends meet. But his having to do that pained her and the both knew it. She had been promised more, much more, and it had all been a lie. She had been used, discarded, abandoned and now unacknowledged. Dima Nachiman, the second younger brother to the very king of Arafel, had taken a fancy to Jaeden’s mother. Once pregnant, Dima had continued to promised her they would wed and that she and their child would not only be taken care of, but have status, wealth, love, and a home. After Jaeden’s birth, Dima continued to lead her along for years with false promises and gaudy trinkets and always in secret. His mother turned down other suiters who would have truly cared for her and her son in the hopes that Dima would be true to his word, and to his boy. It wasn’t until Dima’s formal wedding to another was announced that Mari went and publicly confronted him. It was then that she saw Dima for what he was as he mocked her in her rags and claimed that while she was certainly pretty enough, he had never seen her before and that she and her bastard son should never bother him again or he would have them “taken care of”.

The Light take the bloody Wheel! No cosmic cog slated his destiny. He was not just some predetermined bastard thread in a fixed pattern destined to suffer. While his mother may feel that she has no way to change her plight, Jaeden was determined to make things change, and for the both of them. He was a Nachiman after all, even if that fact was ignored or unbelieved by all. He would find wealth and send it to his mother, he would find skill and prestige and make his name known. Jaeden was going to forge his own destiny and show “The Pattern” that he would weave his own thread and become someone that the world, and especially his father, could not ignore.
